Life can feel like a whirlwind, can't it? Between juggling jobs, family responsibilities, and an endless list of tasks, it’s common for our spiritual lives to take a backseat. As a pastor, I see this struggle often. I recently took a break from posting, and I know many in our community face similar challenges. We all encounter busy seasons, and in the chaos, our connection with Jesus can weaken. That’s the spiritual slide—rarely loud or dramatic, but it quietly hollows you out until you’re busy on the outside and empty on the inside.
When life gets overwhelming, it’s easy to put our spiritual practices aside. We might miss our quiet time, rush through prayers, or even skip church services entirely. This can lead to feelings of disconnection and spiritual emptiness. Many people, including those who lead congregations, experience this; it’s a slippery slope that can leave us feeling distant from God. The symptoms show up in subtle ways: we have less patience, more irritability, and a gnawing sense that we’re running on fumes. The calendar is full, but the soul feels thin.
The Impact of Busyness on Our Spiritual Walk
Busyness can create a gap between us and our spiritual growth. Prioritizing schedules over spiritual practices can cause us to lose sight of what truly matters. Our relationship with Jesus goes beyond just attending church; it involves nurturing a deep connection with Him. Left unchecked, busyness becomes a substitute for closeness—and the result isn’t just fatigue; it’s that quiet emptiness that no achievement can fill.
Neglecting this relationship can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed or lost. Individuals who engage in regular spiritual practices often have higher levels of life satisfaction compared to those who do not. However, those who skip these practices often feel increased anxiety and stress. Even pastors, who guide others, face these challenges.

Practical Steps to Reconnect with Jesus
How can we reconnect with Jesus amid our busy lives? Here are five actionable steps to consider:
Set Aside Time for God: Make it a priority to dedicate time to prayer and Bible study. Even 10-15 minutes daily can make a significant difference. For example, a periodic check-in with God each morning can set a positive tone for your day.
Incorporate Spiritual Practices into Daily Life: Find small ways to bring faith into your everyday routine. You could listen to uplifting worship music during your commute or meditate on a verse while on a break.
Join a Small Group: Being part of a small group can offer the encouragement you need. These gatherings allow members to support each other, share struggles, and grow together in faith, making a substantial difference in maintaining spiritual health.
Practice Gratitude: Take time daily to reflect on what you’re thankful for. This simple act can shift your focus from challenges to blessings, helping cultivate a more positive mindset.
Be Kind to Yourself: Understand that everyone faces busy seasons. It’s normal to feel distant from God at times. Accept where you are and take small steps toward reconnecting. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection.
Finding Your Way Back
Experiencing a spiritual slide is a common challenge, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Life may get busy, but prioritizing our relationship with Jesus is essential. By intentionally taking steps to reconnect, we can navigate the distractions and foster a vibrant faith. Emptiness isn’t your destination—Jesus is. The same Savior who feels “far” in the rush is only one honest prayer away.
Let’s support each other in staying grounded in our walk with Jesus, especially when life feels overwhelming. It’s in those hectic moments that we often need Him the most.
